I would shoot these whitetail specials with full confidence as well, but no reason to switch off the Shwacker. I carry two of each (VPA/Shwacker) but now have restored confidence in mechanicals after a really really really BAD Rage experience in 2008. 3 big bucks and 6 doe in two seasons with them performing flawlessly. No blood trails required not that I really ever needed them much prior. The deer are not liking it much - dying even faster and closer to the stand. I no longer have head stuck in the ground, but am getting two holes. I went fairly extreme for 2019 - Shwacker 2 1/4" cut 125 GR heads. But my arrows were truly dug into the ground so deeply often hard to get out. I really had no reason too - all my deer shot with 125gr 1 1/8" COC VPA heads were dying in site or would at least hear the crash. This mentality got me to thinking and made a switch back to mechanicals in 2019. It’s senseless to shoot a smaller head 8” into the ground instead of putting twice the size cut in the animal and less into the ground. Most mechanicals are also much quieter in flight, causing less reaction than heads screaming to their intended target. Most mechanicals fly better as well as continue to fly better after possibly touching a leaf or unseen twig instead of veering off. ‘better to not penetrate those areas for the deer to recover after a bad shot.

Thinking about bone breaking with whitetails IMO is also foolish, as 99% of the time impacting bone or the shoulder isn’t going to produce a dead deer, as your usually out of the vital zone. Rather expend that energy into hemorrhage producing cut than into the ground. I have taken ALOT of deer and Turkey with them.Īs far as mechanicals being a sham, I once felt fixed blades were always open for business and needed no fixing.īut it’s senseless to shoot a smaller head 8” into the ground instead of putting twice the size cut in the animal and less into the ground. ‘I like the solid cup better as well as the point better than the original reapers.

Grim reaper pro series are nice broadhead. Ranges are under 30 yds and the animals are brutes. So, do you shoot a marginal mechanical that flies straight or a bullet proof fixed that doesn't? It's a dilemma. Now with super fast crossbows, arrow flight is even more complicated. If fixed heads all flew like field points, I think they would be more popular. I think most mechanicals, even if they fail a "durability" test are fine for Whitetail deer of average size. If you are hunting a 300 lb brute from the Canadian Bush I would think twice. Well I think Ashby did his studies even before mechanicals existed but his findings are still valid. Most things get the job done anyway for where we live - its whitetail but to me mechanicals do not make sense to me at all. But that episode was really awesome - the things he talked about with regards to physics and kinetic energy was really interesting. Listening to MeatEater they had Ed Ashby on who did broadheads studies - you can google him - his website has a 20 page paper dedicated to broadheads - fascinating stuff. I think its a sham - a lot like some of the fixed broadheads that advertise perfection. I've alwyas been against mechanical blades.
